If We Like Walking, Let's Visit the Historical Places in Kos Center on Foot


Actually, it is also known as the Bicycle Island.


Neretia Castle: Just like the castle in Bodrum, it was built in the 14th century by the Knights of St. John. It is one of the rare castles built in that period for protection. The castles, built to control the passages between Halicarnassus and Kos, were conquered by the Ottomans in 1522.


Count Francesco Sans House: The second building to support the castle services, also built by the Knights of Saint John.


Hippocrates Tree: It became famous with the legend that Hippocrates, considered the father of medical science, taught his students.


Gazi Hasan Pasha Mosque or Loggia: It was built by Gazi Hasan Pasha in 1786. It is said that stones brought from the Greek temple and the water tanks of the Roman temple were used in its walls.


Port and Ancient Agora: It is one of the largest ancient sites in Kos, bearing traces from the Hellenistic Age to the Middle Ages.


Dionysus Altar: Ancient Greek temple and Hellenistic altar built in the Dorian style dedicated to the Greek God Dionysus.


Casa Romana (Roman House): The restored Roman mansion, dating back to the 3rd century BC, is decorated with mosaics and frescoes. It reflects the wealth of its time.


Roman Odeon: The area where musical competitions and shows were held in honor of Asklepios, dating back to the Roman period.


Western Archaeological Site: The area covering the Decomanus Maximus and Cardo port within the central street between which was revealed during excavations. The Roman House with the mosaic of "The Abduction of Europa", Thermea, the Gymnasium Passage called Xyston, the Nympheaum with the mosaic of "The Trial of Prince Paris" and two Christian Churches are located in this area.


Old Town: The area that was protected after the devastating earthquake in 1933. The narrow streets that are the most visited today and contain cafes, restaurants and shops.


St. Paraskevi Church: Greek Church built in Byzantine style by Architect Orsini in 1931-32.


‘’Panellenion’’ Complex: Designed in 1933 and built in 1935, this complex was used as the headquarters of the Fascist Italian Party. It is next to the Cinema and Theater building. Located in the center of the city, this building is an original example of the fascist and international architecture of the period.


Municipal Market: Built by Italian colonists in 1933 and 1935. Arabesque styles can be seen in its details. It is now a building where greengrocers and spice shops are located.


Defterdar Mosque: Built in the 18th century by the Defterdarı İbrahim Efendi, who collected the taxes of the time, together with two shops underneath.


Archaeological Museum: Located in Eleftherios Square, the museum displays many Roman and Hellenistic sculptures. The mosaics depicting the demigod Asclepius being welcomed by Hippocrates are worth seeing.
